What’s a Health Insurance Exchange (HIX)?

A result of the Affordable Care Act, a Health Insurance Exchange is a web portal “store” run by either a State or the Federal government that determines if a person is eligible for a reduced price for the purchase of their health insurance based on their income (an individual tax credit), features the approved private insurance companies’ health insurance plans from which the individual can choose, then provides an enrollment process into a plan, bills the individual for that plan, and forwards the premium to the insurance company. That’s a basic “what is”.

The first enrollment period for State or the Federal health insurance exchanges will begin in October 2013 through December, 2013, for an active enrollment date of January 1, 2014.
